Workshop?

Ladies, is anyone interested in my calling Latta and requesting use of the kitchen for a cooking workshop?  We can spend a winter day in the warm kitchen trying some period recipes over the hearth.  We could also try making butter, dip candles, etc.  Let me know if there is any interest and I'll contact Kristen and ask if there is an available Saturday or Sunday.

I'd love it!!!  This might be something we can consider doing down at Waxhaw, too.  I'm doing some research on cooking in the beehive oven and I'm going to give it a try this weekend with the bread.  I'd love to try other things... pies, cakes, casseroles, etc....

But I digress.. YES I'd love to do a cooking workshop at Latta!

Let me know when!

Cooking demonstration

I should take this time to thank the ladies for their superior attention to detail.  Many times units focus in on how sharp their units look in the field completely forgetting the contributions of others to create a realistic impression.  In this case, cooking has really taken center stage at each event.  Of course this leaves the soldiers looking a bit out of place as they march on to the field with full bellies and a smile for having shoveled down the last piece of peach pie.

Yes to the cooking workshop!  It is so great to be able to cook up a yummy meal for everyone - we have done this at most of our events and it has actually turned out to be something I look forward to.  So...count me in on the workshops!

Thanks for the honorable "pie" mention Ron....it was quite tasty wasn't it? Laughing

I'm open to Waxhaw or Latta.  Perhaps this winter and spring we can do a day at each location!  We might even want to try our hands at dipping candles, making soap, churning butter, etc.  This is soooooo much fun!

The question now is, do we want to do the workshop at Latta (small kitchen) or at Waxhaw (whole house available)?

I vote for Waxhaw, simply because while the food it cooking, during our downtime, we could work on knitting, crocheting or whatever and there's plenty of room there without us feeling like we're right on top of each other.  But that's just my 2 cents.  I'll go with whatever the majority chooses.

Well, I think both places & relationships are important, so I agree that trying to do a workshop at both places might be a good thing....however, I am also on board to whatever the majority decides!

Places to cook

If we can arrange it both.  Do not leave out opportunities to combine things together.  Latta has a Winter Quarters encampment for the public scheduled for Jan 10-11.  This event has been supported by the members of the 35th before they were members of the 35th so they will likely support it again this year.  Is there any reason you all can not do a cooking and females waiting for their men to return home from battle on the same day?

I think it would be a great idea to have a workshop/cook during the winter encampment.  Unfortunately, I have to work on that Saturday (Jan. 10) as CMS has the Magnet Schools Fair that Saturday.  But, I could cook on Sunday.  I know the poll results indicated folks prefer Saturday as a workshop, but if folks wanted to cook on Saturday instead of or in addition to Sunday, I could contact Karen about our using the kitchen on both days.  Just let me know your thoughts on that ladies!

I would be open to a Sunday - I just love getting together with you all, hanging out.  The cooking/learning is an extra bonus!  Very Happy

I'm open to a Sunday as well.

So since we're planning Latta for January, let's look to do a Saturday down at Waxhaw in February... Ron, when are you guys planning your winter encampment?  It would be cool if we could do them the same weekend and us ladies (and children) could sleep in the house Very Happy

Ladies, I gave Karen a call about a cooking workshop the weekend of the Winter Quarters.   She is more than willing to let us use the kitchen to have a cooking workshop, but she reminded me that during the Winter Quarters event, they focus on cooking using substitutions as was the case when food was hard to come by.  We wouldn't be able to cook the things we'd like to cook.  I'd suggest we have our workshop at another time, just so we can try the recipes we'd like to try.  What are your thoughts?

That's ok with me.  We can still do the cooking workshop at Waxhaw when our guys do their winter encampment, and I think we'll be able to do the cooking we want, as they would be two separate demonstrations.  I'll talk to Sharon about it to be sure.
